GuitarPickin’ And Grinnin’For many years, the guitar has offered an outlet for many musicians and musician wannabes. Guitar-like instruments have been around for about 5000 years and are still one of the most popular musical instruments in the world. For those of you not familiar with the term “pickin’ and grinnin’”, this phrase was made popular by people who are involved in the bluegrass genre – and is what musicians do at bluegrass jam sessions – pick the strings and grin because it makes them happy! Almost every music genre features guitar music – whether you are a rocker, a country music fan, or a bluegrass fan. Guitars are a large part of the music scene! Electric guitars have always popular on the rock scene and now are becoming popular on the country scene – where many musicians are breaking away from acoustic guitars. Which Guitar Is Your Favorite? The three most popular types of guitars are the electric guitar, the bass guitar, and the acoustic guitar. While some performers still use acoustic guitars, these are used much of the time by beginners – who find it easier to learn guitar scales without the loud sound of the amplifier. An acoustic guitar also allows for plenty of practice time without disturbing others in the house – your parents for example! Gibson and Fender are two of the most popular brands of electric guitars – made famous by such rock legends as Sting, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmy Page, and Jimi Hendrix. Great musicians have learned to make many sounds with electric guitars, such as the sounds of a train approaching. Some guitar players are so great; they become more popular than the lead singer of the band, who is usually in the spotlight more often. For some people, music is just not music with the bass – and the bass guitar is a popular instrument in many music genres, including rock, country, and funk. Larry Graham of Sly and the Family Stone, a popular funk group of the late 60’s and early 70’s, started the method of bass playing called “slap and pop”, in which the bassist does not use a pick, but rather pops or thumps the strings using the thumb and fingers. This method of bass playing has remained popular in the funk genre – and has even begun making its mark in other genres, such as heavy metal.
