Online LibraryGoing To The LibraryFor many, many years, going to the library has been an important part of childhood. Do you remember how important you felt when you were presented with your first library card – with your own name on it? Now, you were responsible for taking care of that precious book that was entrusted to you. Even with popularity of the Internet today, going to the library is one of the most enjoyable childhood pastimes. Will online libraries take the place of visiting the library or will they add to the experience? What Is A Library? First of all, we must determine exactly what a library is. Okay, I know that the first thought that usually pops into your head is the brick building (fancy or small) that serves as the town library – you join free, receive a library card, and can choose from among a vast array of books to “check-out”. There are also periodicals, newspapers, reference books, and any number of materials that can only be used in the library. And, then you think of a library in your home – a collection of your favorite books. Some people have rooms set aside for their “library”, while others have their libraries on bookshelves throughout their home. So, I think that we can safely determine that a library is a collection of books, magazines, and newspapers – whether it is housed in a building of it’s own or in your home. And, now, with the world going virtual, there is the online library. Online Libraries With just a little search, you will find online libraries – free online libraries and libraries that charge a fee for their services in the form of membership fees. So, who will benefit from the online library? One particular group that comes to mind is the group of adults that are choosing to go to college for the first time or go back to college to attain the degree they sought. And, this is a very large group! But, most of these people are career people and working Mom’s and Dad’s – they don’t have time in their busy schedules to spend their days in a physical library – so, they turn to a virtual, online library. Most online colleges provide their own free online library for students to use – so, this is a valuable resource for students. But, for those who prefer to attend college classes at their local college, it can save students lots of time by finding a library online. And, using an online free library can also save students money. For those of us who just love to read, there are online libraries just for us. Anyone can start an online library – just provide books in a format compatible with the virtual world and let people read them for free. Of course, anyone wanting to provide a book online library must check the laws and rules pertaining to copyrights. Some authors who are trying to make a name for themselves start online libraries that feature their books – this is a great way to show the public what they have to offer. Some people may think that an author would lose money this way, but most of time, if a person reads the book online, they will purchase a hard copy for their home. If an author writes in series, providing the first book of a series online is a great way to get readers interested and excited about the next book in the series! So, online libraries can be a win-win situation for everyone! So, you are ready to visit an online public library – how do you find what you need? Or you just want to find your favorite book or a publication that you need to read for work or school – how do you find what you need? You can even find library catalogues online! You can find a library catalogue that is specific to certain libraries (such as the Library of Congress) or you can find library catalogues that are specific to certain cities or states. So, no more excuses! Your mind is something that needs to be fed daily – and now, you don’t even have to leave your house – just visit an online library!
