PoemsI Made A Rhyme! We all enjoy making a rhyme – and then claiming to be a poet and didn’t know it – but how many poets are actually hiding in the world with no outlet for their work? What is a poem, anyway? A poem is a composition that describes a beautiful experience or scene (or maybe one that is not so beautiful) in rhythmical lines. Poetry comes in many shapes and lengths – but, the one thing that all poems have in common is that they can be read with a rhythm all their own. Types Of Poems There are many types of poems. Acrostic poems are very popular and are used many times by teachers to help students learn about a certain topic. In an acrostic poem, the first letters of each line form a word or message about the subject. For instance, near Mother’s Day, many students write acrostic poems for their mothers using the letter of the word mother as the first letter of each line. Ballads are narrative poems that tell a story. Couplets are a very popular type of poem – couplets have to successive lines the end in words that rhyme. For, instance – The cat was sad; because the dog was bad. Free verse poems are a fluid form of poetry that has no rules. These are probably the easiest form of poetry to write. Along with the many types of poems, there are also many kinds of poems – romantic poems, short poems, long poems, happy poems, and sad poems. Some poems tell a story and some poems describe something (perhaps a tree or a blue sky). Well-written poem cause the reader to imagine the very thing that the poet is describing! Poems can be used for a number of things. Some people place religious poems in frames and hang them on the wall – one of the most famous poems is “Footprints in the Sand”. Some people use inspiring poems as a daily reminder that life is what you make of it or as daily reminders that being true to oneself is the way to becoming a successful person – and I mean in life, not only business. Poems are very much a part of everyday life – and many websites offer free poems that can be copied and used on a personal basis for inspiration, help during bad times, and just to make your day a little brighter. Kids Poems One of the most successful ways to help children learn to read is by using kid’s poems. One of the most famous writers of poems for kids is Dr. Seuss, who birthday is grandly celebrated each year in schools across America by the serving of green eggs and ham! Other forms of poems designed to catch children’s attention and spark an interest in reading are nursery rhymes – short poems that are written if rhyming verse. Mother Goose is one of the leaders in nursery rhymes. Millions of kids worldwide have learned to read with the help of poems from Dr. Seuss and nursery rhymes from Mother Goose. Not only have poems been used throughout the years to tell stories that can help guide you through life; poems have also been used a way to teach children the basic skills of reading and basic social skills – and with the help of Dr. Seuss, children can travel to places unimaginable filled with appliance and people with names that only a child could love. So, don’t be a Grinch – introduce your child to the wonderful world of poetry!
